Construction

Residential and commercial building across Salt Lake, Utah and Washington counties keeps Utah contractors bidding more work than their cash can comfortably carry. Equipment financing spreads the cost of excavators and trucks over their working life, and a revolving line covers materials and payroll between draws.

FAQ

Utah business loan questions

What does Utah’s commercial financing law require?

Utah Code Title 7, Chapter 27 requires companies that provide commercial financing to Utah businesses to register with the Department of Financial Institutions and give disclosures on covered transactions. The Department’s FAQ says transactions over $1,000,000 are exempt, and registrations expire each December 31 and renew through NMLS.

How does the Utah Small Business Credit Initiative help borrowers?

USBCI works through enrolled local lenders. Its Loan Participation Program blends in lower-rate state funds on loans of $10,000 to $20 million, and its Capital Access Program funds a loan loss reserve for businesses with limited collateral. Your lender has to participate and approve the loan, so ask early in the process.

Is SBDC consulting in Utah really free?

Yes. The Utah SBDC describes its consulting, training and resources as free for Utah entrepreneurs. Advisors can help you prepare financial statements and projections, which makes a loan application easier to evaluate.

What financing do Utah contractors typically use?

Construction is Utah’s largest small-business employer, and contractors commonly pair equipment financing for machinery with a revolving line of credit for materials and payroll between progress payments. Invoice financing can help when general contractors or developers pay slowly.
